The Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, successfully hosted the International Guest Lecture – IEEE Distinguished Lecture: Semiconductor Lecture Series on 13 May 2026 at Lecture Theater I (LT I), CSA Building. The event featured Prof. Mansun J. Chan from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), a globally recognized expert in semiconductor devices and nanoelectronics. The lecture provided students, researchers, and faculty members with valuable insights into the latest developments in transistor technology and semiconductor innovation.
The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Ing. Faizal A. Samman, who highlighted the importance of international research collaboration in advancing semiconductor technology. He emphasized that engagement with leading global experts helps strengthen research capacity while inspiring innovation among students and academics.
In his lecture, “The Journey of MOSFET: From Planar to Stacked 3D Transistors,” Prof. Mansun J. Chan reviewed the evolution of Metal–Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs), from conventional planar structures to advanced stacked 3D architectures. He explained how continuous device scaling has driven the development of more efficient, high-performance transistor designs to meet the demands of next-generation electronic systems.
The lecture also discussed the technological challenges associated with transistor miniaturization, including power consumption, heat dissipation, fabrication complexity, and device reliability. Prof. Chan highlighted how advanced three dimensional transistor structures, such as FinFETs and stacked architectures, have become essential solutions for sustaining semiconductor performance in accordance with the increasing demands of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and next-generation communication technologies.
Following the presentation, participants actively engaged in an interactive discussion covering semiconductor manufacturing, future research directions, and opportunities for international collaboration. Students and researchers explored topics related to device modeling, integrated circuit design, and the evolving role of semiconductor technology in supporting global digital transformation. The discussion provided participants with broader perspectives on both academic research and industrial applications.
